By Allison Rodman, Sales Director at Rhoda Goldman Plaza
If you’re a book lover, downsizing can feel like a real emotional challenge. Books are more than pages and covers—they’re companions, memories, and markers of who we are. For many of us, there’s always been a good book tucked under our arm, ready to take us on another journey.
So when it’s time to move to a smaller space, deciding what to do with your cherished collection can feel overwhelming. Parting with books may feel like parting with old friends.
As I help future residents plan their moves to Rhoda Goldman Plaza, one question comes up again and again:
“Would you take my books for your library?”
I always have to smile and say no—otherwise, we’d be buried in wonderful piles of books! But the good news is that there are many meaningful ways to give your books a new home where they’ll be appreciated and loved.
Great Places in San Francisco to Donate Your Books
If you’re ready to pass along your collection, here are some local organizations that welcome book donations:
- Friends of the San Francisco Public Library: Accepts donations by appointment. Your books will help support literacy programs and library services. Call 415-522-8606 to schedule a drop-off.
- The Children’s Book Project: Donates children’s books to families and schools, ensuring every child—regardless of income—can own a book.
- Prisoners Literature Project: Sends free books to incarcerated individuals across the country, offering education and connection through reading.
- Book Wagon SF: Collects and distributes books to schools, shelters, and community centers in neighborhoods with limited access to reading materials.
A New Chapter Awaits
Downsizing doesn’t mean letting go of the things that matter most—it’s about creating space for new experiences, friendships, and opportunities to grow. At Rhoda Goldman Plaza, our residents discover that moving forward can be both freeing and fulfilling.
